Choosing Between the NavMap and Navigation Bar

Components

The NavMap and Navigation Bar components provide similar navigation features for your

web pages; each can be used to automatically generate navigation menus based on site

hierarchy. To help you determine when to use each of these components, consider the

following important points:



The NavMap component returns information about all nodes in a site structure,

regardless of their relationship to the page that contains the component. This is ideal

for generating navigation features that will be identical across all pages. For example,

use the NavMap component to create top level navigation schemes, which site visitors

use to access different sections of a site. Then, within each section, use the

Navigation Bar component to generate navigation schemes for all of the pages in a

section. For more information on the NavMap component, see "NavMap" on page 95.



The Navigation Bar component always generates navigation information that is

relative to the page that contains the component. This is ideal for navigation features

which help users keep track of their location in a specific section of a site. For

example, you might use the Navigation Bar component to generate a sub-menu of all

pages in one area, for example product details pages that all pertain to products of a

common type, and which are grouped together in your site structure.

How the Navigation Bar Works

The Navigation Bar component contains three sections, the opening tag, the body, and

the closing tag.

The opening tag defines the destinations for the navigation buttons. The body defines the

following:



For image buttons, which images to use for the buttons' active and inactive states,

and whether any text should appear on top of the images



For text buttons, what text to use for the buttons' active and inactive states



Any HTML formatting for the buttons, such as spacing or line breaks



Optionally, whether to retrieve and display information about linked assets in the

navigation bar, such as metadata values



Optionally, how to format date values, if they are used in button text

When you deploy an asset that contains the Navigation Bar component, Collage generates

the buttons based on these settings.
